History of the Forensic Toxicology Service

In 1976, Luis Concheiro became the Head of the Legal Medicine Department in the University of Santiago de Compostela, and tenaciously and firmly he started to design what nowadays constitutes the University Institute of Legal Medicine. For this purpose, and inspired on the German Legal Medicine system, which he had indirectly come to know during his PhD in the National Institute of Legal Medicine in Lisbon (Portugal), he created the Forensic Toxicology Service. Manuel López-Rivadulla, who had finished his PhD in the Faculty of Sciences, was named Head of this Service. Nowadays, the Service staff is constituted by Purificación Fernández, from the Faculty of Pharmacy, Ana Bermejo and Angelines Cruz from Medicine. The Forensic Toxicology Service remains today in a top position in Forensic Toxicology. Later on, Inés Sánchez and Chus Tabernero, as well as Daniel González Aido as laboratory technician, joined the already consolidated groups.

During all these years, a large number of students of Medicine, Pharmacy, Chemistry and Veterinary Medicine have chosen this department to do research in the lab using more and more sophisticated instruments, and carrying out the real work embodied in the scientific literature and in the daily legal-medical expertise written reports.
